
On January 30, 2012, Arvind Khanna won with a margin of 12,473 votes defeating SAD candidate Gobind Singh Longowal.
Arvind’s victory did not come as a surprise as he has been working relentlessly for the welfare of the people of Sangrur district for over a decade. He had won the Sangrur election in 2002, with a record margin of 19,132 votes, defeating independent candidate Ranjit Singh Balian, who was earlier a minister in the SAD-BJP government.
Arvind had started working in Sangrur district in 1997, providing primary healthcare to villagers and empowering women both socially and financially. Today, over 550 villages are covered through various healthcare and social empowerment initiatives, all started personally by him.
